About MMA files

The .mma file extension is a source of frequent confusion because it is shared by three completely different software ecosystems.

  1. Flash Sound Archive (Legacy): As indicated by legacy data, this format was historically used with Macromedia (now Adobe) technologies to store audio assets. These are proprietary containers, meaning you cannot simply double-click to play them in Spotify or Windows Media Player. They are effectively "locked" audio requiring conversion to standard formats like MP3 or WAV for modern playback.
  2. MindManager Map: It is also a format for MindManager, a leading mind-mapping tool by Mindjet. While modern versions favor the MMAP extension, older or compressed .MMA files still circulate. These are strictly data files; opening them without the paid software is impossible unless you convert them to PDF or JPG for viewing.
  3. Musical MIDI Accompaniment: Frequently, musicians encounter .MMA files used by software like Band-in-a-Box. These contain MIDI arrangement data, not actual recorded sound, and must be rendered or converted to listenable audio.
