About MINE files

A .mine file is a legacy level data archive used by Minecraft Classic, the 2009 browser-based predecessor to the modern game. These files store the block layout, dimensions, and metadata of a single-player world. Internally, a .mine file is a GZIP compressed stream containing serialized Java objects, a format that was abandoned in favor of the more robust NBT (Named Binary Tag) system in later versions.

The main problem with .mine files is that current versions of Minecraft (both Java and Bedrock editions) cannot natively read or import them. Users attempting to recover nostalgic worlds from old backups often find them incompatible with modern loaders. Additionally, the extension is generic; if you did not create the file in Minecraft, it may be a file encrypted by the NEMTY ransomware family, which sometimes uses similar naming conventions.

To use a .mine level today, you must convert it into a schematic file or a generic mclevel format. This is best achieved using legacy tools like MCEdit (specifically versions compatible with Classic) or specialized Python conversion scripts. Once converted to a schematic, the structure can be imported into modern worlds using tools like WorldEdit or Litematica.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MINE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DOCX, MCLEVEL, MCA and MCMETA files.

The MINE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MINE converter.
