About MCLEVEL files

The .mclevel file is a legacy Minecraft Indev world save file used to store block data, player inventory, and world state for early versions of the game. Structurally, it is a GZIP-compressed archive containing NBT (Named Binary Tag) data. These files were exclusively generated by Minecraft during its Indev phase (early 2010).

To interact with .mclevel files today, users typically rely on legacy community tools like MCEdit or modern world converters like Amulet Editor. Users usually need to convert this file to migrate nostalgic legacy worlds into modern Minecraft versions. The main disadvantage of the .mclevel format is its severe obsolescence: it is heavily restricted by game engine limitations, uses a finite map size constraint, and is completely unreadable by web browsers or standard text editors.

The best conversion target is usually MCA (Anvil format) to play the world in modern Minecraft, or OBJ to render the block geometry in 3D software like Blender. However, converting across so many game versions often results in missing chunks, corrupted block IDs, or lost player metadata.

Because this is a highly specific, proprietary game state format, it is extremely difficult to open or convert with generic tools. Standard online converters fail to process it because they cannot parse the proprietary Minecraft NBT schema hidden inside. Often, only the original game engine or specialized community software can properly interpret the voxel data. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the underlying GZIP compression, and extract internal data where supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MCLEVEL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MINE, MCA and NBT files.
