About MCLEVEL files

The .mclevel file is a legacy game data format created during the Indev (In Development) phase of Minecraft, dating back to early 2010. These files store complete world data - including terrain blocks, entities, and player location - specifically for the finite, non-infinite maps of that era. Users attempting to load these archives often encounter "unrecognized format" errors or corruption. The files themselves are essentially GZIP-compressed NBT (Named Binary Tag) structures.

To restore or play these historic worlds, you typically need to use intermediate conversion tools. For gameplay, the most reliable path is converting the level to a newer format using a specialized editor like MCEdit or MCEdit-Unified, which can export the geometry to standard schematics or upgrade the world format. For data extraction or debugging, converting the file to raw NBT or uncompressed XML allows you to inspect inventory contents and level metadata without launching the game.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MCLEVEL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MINE, MCA and NBT files.
