About MCMETA files
The .mcmeta file format is primarily used by Minecraft to define the properties of resource packs and data packs. The most common iteration is the pack.mcmeta file, which sits at the root directory of a pack and tells the game engine how to load custom textures, models, or data. Under the hood, these are standard JSON files encoded in UTF-8.
Because they are plain text, you can open and edit them with any modern code editor like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code.
The main disadvantage of the .mcmeta extension is that standard desktop operating systems do not recognize it. Double-clicking the file usually triggers an 'Open with...' prompt. Furthermore, because the game engine relies on strict JSON parser rules, a single missing comma or unclosed bracket will cause the entire resource pack to fail silently. Users often need to rename or convert these files simply to edit them safely, validate the syntax, or extract the text without breaking the structure.
The best target formats for conversion are JSON or TXT. Converting to JSON allows code editors to apply proper syntax highlighting and error validation. Converting to TXT makes the file universally accessible on mobile devices and older systems. No data is lost during these text-to-text conversions.
While the extension is specific to Mojang Studios, the underlying data is accessible. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our analyzer detects the embedded JSON structure, allows you to read the text directly, and converts it to standard formats to help you fix errors and rebuild your pack.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MCMETA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MCMETA file to ZIP, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP or SAV, you can use Minecraft or similar software from the "Resource Pack Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to MCMETA, try Minecraft or another comparable tool in the "Resource Pack Configuration" category.
The MCMETA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MCMETA converter.
