About MHK files
The .mhk file extension is primarily associated with the Mohawk engine, a proprietary technology developed by Brøderbund and Cyan Worlds for classic interactive titles like Riven: The Sequel to Myst and various Living Books. Functioning as a massive container, these files package thousands of game assets - including bitmaps, audio clips, and scripts - into a single compressed archive.
For most users, the main challenge with .mhk files is their "black box" nature; they are not standard folders and cannot be opened by modern operating systems or generic archive tools like WinRAR. This proprietary lock-in makes accessing the nostalgic music or artwork inside impossible without specialized extraction utilities. To use these assets, you typically need to "convert" the archive by extracting its contents into standard formats. Common conversion targets include WAV or MP3 for sound effects, JPG or PNG for texture extraction, and MOV for embedded video sequences.
Note: A smaller subset of users may encounter .mhk files generated by Autodesk Maya. In this context, the file serves as a Maya Hotkey preference file, storing custom keyboard shortcuts in a plain text format. These do not require conversion but rather placement in the correct user preference directory.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MHK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MHK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MHK converter.
