About MHK files
The .mhk file format is primarily used as a Mohawk game resource archive by the defunct Brøderbund Software and modern HyperStudio. These files act as proprietary containers for multimedia assets, packing images, audio clips, and scripts used in classic 90s CD-ROM games like Myst and Riven into a single file. Secondary uses include Autodesk Maya hotkey configuration files, CAD 2D geometry data for 4M S.A. software, and Rocscience Dips Mohr's Circle data files.
The main disadvantage of an .mhk game archive is its proprietary, outdated nature. Modern operating systems cannot natively open these files, and standard archive utilities like WinRAR or 7-Zip will fail to extract their contents. Users often struggle to access nostalgic game audio or images without relying on complex, reverse-engineering command-line tools.
To make these embedded multimedia assets usable today, you need to extract and convert the internal files. For audio playback, convert extracted files to WAV or MP3. For web and image editing, convert to PNG or JPG. If your file is a Maya hotkey preference, it is a plain text file and can be converted or viewed as a standard TXT file. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing obsolete software.

The MHK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MHK converter.
