About TBRES files

The .tbres file is primarily a Tableau Cached Token Response file used by Tableau to store authentication tokens. It prevents users from needing to repeatedly log in when connecting to secured data sources. It is also used by Microsoft as a Store TokenBroker Cache File for managing Windows app authentications.

These files are created and managed automatically by Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, or the Windows operating system. They handle complex OAuth flows and temporary credentials in the background.

This is a highly specialized system cache file, which means it has severe limitations for end-users. It is not designed to be opened manually. The tokens inside are usually encrypted or encoded for security purposes. Users typically encounter these files when troubleshooting login errors, clearing system caches, or fixing sync loops. Standard online converters fail to process it because it contains proprietary system-specific authentication data, not standard media or document content.

You cannot meaningfully convert a .tbres file to a standard document format like PDF or DOCX. If you need to read the contents for debugging, your best conversion target is a plain text format like TXT or JSON, assuming the file is not heavily encrypted.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary cache format. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. We can inspect the file and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TBRES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RESOURCES, UTC and U files.

The TBRES Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TBRES converter.
