About MGZ files
The .MGZ file extension serves completely unrelated purposes depending on its origin. Primarily, it operates as a GZIP-compressed MRI volume data file utilized by FreeSurfer, a popular neuroimaging analysis suite. Alternatively, it is generated as a recorded game replay file by Age of Empires II or functions as a ZIP-compressed personal finance database backup within WISO Mein Geld.
The main disadvantage of the .MGZ format is its highly restrictive and context-dependent nature. FreeSurfer MRI files demand a specialized UNIX-like software environment to read properly, severely limiting accessibility for casual users. Age of Empires II replay files are extremely fragile; they record only raw game inputs rather than actual video footage, meaning they will completely fail to load or desync if opened in a mismatched patch version of the game. WISO Mein Geld backups are locked within a proprietary consumer software ecosystem.
Conversion targets rely entirely on the file's source. Neuroimaging researchers frequently convert .MGZ files to NII or .NII.GZ (NIfTI format) to guarantee compatibility with broader toolkits like FSL or SPM. For Age of Empires II replays, direct conversion to a standard video format like MP4 or AVI is technically impossible. You must play the file inside the original game engine and capture the screen manually.
Standard online converters invariably fail to process .MGZ files because they lack the highly specialized neuroimaging libraries or game engine decoders required to interpret the binary data. It is a closed format where often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Because many .MGZ files utilize standard GZIP or ZIP compression under the hood, our analysis can often detect the embedded format, allowing you to extract the underlying data safely.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MGZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MGZ file to NII, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE or ARJ, you can use FreeSurfer or similar software from the "Compressed MRI Volume Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to MGZ, try FreeSurfer or another comparable tool in the "Compressed MRI Volume Data" category.
The MGZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MGZ converter.
