An .MFA file is the proprietary source project format for games and applications created using Clickteam Fusion 2.5 (formerly Multimedia Fusion 2). It contains the complete source code, including the visual storyboard, event editor logic, embedded assets (sprites, audio), and extension dependencies.
Because .MFA files are binary and deeply tied to the Clickteam runtime engine, they present significant friction for sharing; they cannot be played or executed directly like an EXE file. A common frustration is the "Missing Extension" error - if the original developer used third-party plugins (extensions) that you do not have installed, the file will refuse to open or load with broken functionality. Additionally, older .MFA files from Multimedia Fusion 1.5 or The Games Factory may require specific legacy converters to open in modern versions.
To distribute your work, you must "convert" (compile) the .MFA using the Clickteam Fusion software itself. For Windows distribution, build to EXE. For mobile, export to APK (Android) or IPA (iOS). For the web, the HTML5 exporter is the standard.
