About MDC files
An .MDC file most commonly acts as a rendered report document or compiled report definition generated by Stimulsoft Reports. In this context, it stores business intelligence data, layouts, and formatting, utilizing underlying XML or JSON structures. However, this extension is heavily fragmented and overloaded. It is also used for thermal analysis measurement data by Netzsch Proteus, application metadata caches in Microsoft Dynamics 365, multidimensional data cubes in IBM Cognos, AI assistant rule files in the Cursor code editor, and even 3D models for the classic game Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Because of this extreme fragmentation, users constantly struggle to open or share .MDC files. A file saved from an expensive thermal analysis machine will look entirely different from a standard business report or a legacy MIDI sequence. Sharing an .MDC file with clients or colleagues is highly impractical, as they almost certainly lack the specific, often expensive, proprietary software required to view it. To make these files usable, you usually need to convert them. For Stimulsoft reports, exporting to PDF, DOCX, or XLSX is ideal for sharing. For data cubes and thermal analysis data, exporting to CSV or XLSX is necessary to preserve raw tabular data. Standard online converters fail with .MDC files because they rely solely on the file extension rather than the internal data structure.
