About MD5SUM files

The .md5sum file is a plain text document that stores 128-bit hash values and associated file names. It is generated by the MD5 message-digest algorithm to verify data integrity and detect corrupted file transfers. Users typically process these files using command-line tools like GNU Core Utilities (md5sum) on Linux or CertUtil on Windows.

The main disadvantage of the .md5sum format is its lack of accessibility for average users. Opening it without command-line knowledge only reveals a confusing 32-character hexadecimal string next to a file name. Furthermore, the MD5 algorithm is cryptographically compromised. It is highly vulnerable to collision attacks, meaning malicious files can easily fake an identical hash. It requires technical knowledge to run checks, and it should never be used for security purposes today.

If you need to extract or share the hash strings for documentation, convert the .md5sum file to a standard TXT or CSV format.

Because .md5sum files are technically just raw text strings, standard online converters often fail to process them if they expect a complex media format. If our analysis detects the supported underlying text format, viewing or conversion to common document types is easily achievable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MD5SUM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SFV, MD5, CRC and TEXT files.

The MD5SUM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MD5SUM converter.
