The .mcb extension is shared among several completely unrelated applications. Most commonly, it functions as a backup browser file for Microsoft Money or a bridge structural analysis model for Midas Civil. It is also utilized as a recipe backup format for the My CookBook application, a class timetable schedule backup for the My Class Timetable app, and an Absolute Database file by ComponentAce.
This extreme fragmentation makes the .mcb format frustrating to handle. The files are highly proprietary and depend entirely on the creator app. Microsoft Money is long discontinued, leaving users stranded with legacy financial data that is difficult to migrate. Midas Civil requires an expensive commercial license to open structural models. None of these primary formats can be natively opened by web browsers, text editors, or standard operating system utilities.
