About M64 files

The .m64 file format primarily serves two distinct purposes in the emulation and ROM hacking communities: it is either a Mupen64 Emulator Movie file or a Nintendo 64 Music Sequence file. A minor industrial use case also exists as a machine environment data file for CAD/CAM software like TopSolid.

In the context of N64 emulation, a movie file does not actually contain video. Instead, it is a lightweight data log of controller inputs used for Tool-Assisted Speedruns (TAS). When loaded alongside the exact game ROM in an emulator like Mupen64Plus or Project64, the emulator replays the exact button presses frame-by-frame. As a music sequence, the .m64 file functions like a specialized MIDI file tailored to the soundbanks of games like Super Mario 64.

The main disadvantage of the .m64 format is its deceptive nature. Users frequently assume an .m64 "movie" will play in standard media software like VLC, or that an .m64 "audio" file will play in iTunes. Because the file lacks actual audio or video streams, standard conversion methods fail. To convert an .m64 movie to an MP4 or MKV video, you must physically play the file inside the emulator and capture the screen output. To convert the music sequences, specialized ROM hacking tools are required to extract the data into standard MID (MIDI) files.

Because this file format is heavily dependent on the specific emulator state and external game ROMs, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your M64 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
