To convert other file formats to the "Linux Software Module" file type, you need software like Slax Linux or a similar tool.

About LZM files

The .lzm file format primarily functions as a Slax Linux Software Module. These files act as compressed software packages or modules designed for the Slax and Porteus live Linux distributions. Under the hood, an .lzm file is typically a read-only SquashFS filesystem compressed using the LZMA algorithm. A secondary, less common use for this extension is simply a standard Lzip compressed archive.

The major disadvantage of the .lzm format is its highly specialized use case. These modules are engineered to be mounted on the fly by a live Linux operating system. If you are operating on Windows or macOS, you cannot mount or execute them natively. They are effectively closed black boxes outside of their target Linux environments, frustrating users who just want to access the internal files.

To make the contents usable, users must extract or convert the .lzm file into standard archive formats like ZIP, TAR, or 7Z. This process extracts the embedded directory structure, making the internal binaries and text files accessible across all operating systems. Keep in mind that extracting the files does not make Linux software run on Windows; it simply makes the data readable.

Because it is a niche, system-specific module, standard online converters fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. Even if the format is difficult to open, our analysis engine can often unpack the embedded filesystem to let you inspect the internal files.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LZM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MJS, SEM and IML files.

The LZM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LZM converter.
