About LX01 files

The .LX01 file is a proprietary EnCase Logical Evidence File. Digital forensic investigators use it to store specific files and folders extracted from a target drive, preserving their metadata, folder structure, and cryptographic hashes. The format is primarily managed by EnCase Forensic and EnCase eDiscovery, which are developed by OpenText (formerly Guidance Software).

The primary disadvantage of the .LX01 format is extreme vendor lock-in. Opening these files natively requires a commercial forensic software license or hardware dongle that costs thousands of dollars. The files frequently exceed hundreds of gigabytes, contain complex AES-256 encryption, and are completely unsupported by Windows, macOS, or standard web browsers.

If you need to share the extracted evidence with non-technical legal teams, the best approach is to export the contents to a standard ZIP archive, or convert the individual documents to PDF or DOCX. Be aware that extracting the files directly into standard formats destroys the forensic chain of custody and nullifies the internal MD5 or SHA-1 hash verification.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard online converters cannot parse the proprietary LZMA compression blocks, forensic headers, and chunk hashing mechanisms. Often, only the original forensic software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LX01 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
