The Problem: You have encountered a .LTR file, which is most likely a document created by Corel WordPerfect, the once-dominant word processor that still maintains a loyal user base in legal and government sectors. These files are typically pre-formatted letter templates or saved correspondence. While they contain standard text and formatting codes, they are proprietary. Sending a .LTR file to a colleague who only uses Microsoft Word or Google Docs often results in frustration; the file may not open at all, or if it does, the layout - specifically headers, footers, and margins - often breaks completely due to different rendering engines.
The Solution: To make these files usable again, conversion is necessary. For continued editing and collaboration, convert your .LTR files to DOCX. This makes the content accessible in modern office suites, though you may need to adjust the formatting slightly after conversion. If the document is for reference only (e.g., an archived legal letter), convert it to .PDF/A. This freezes the visual layout and prevents accidental edits. A less common variant of this extension is an XML-based steel reinforcement schedule used by Nemetschek Allplan for CAD; in that specific engineering context, the file is essentially data rather than a document.
