About GAL files
The .gal extension serves two distinct, specialized communities: pixel artists and bioinformaticians. The most common variation is the GraphicsGale Project file, native to GraphicsGale, a dedicated tool for creating pixel art and spriting for retro games. These files contain multiple layers, frames for animation, and palette data. The major difficulty is that .gal files are proprietary; they cannot be opened by standard image viewers, web browsers, or even industry giants like Adobe Photoshop without plugin support. To showcase your sprites on the web or import them into game engines like Unity, you typically need to convert them to flattened PNG sequences, GIF animations, or sprite sheets.
In a scientific context, a .gal file is a GenePix Array List generated by GenePix Pro software from Molecular Devices. These are essentially text-based maps used in microarray analysis to define the layout of biological probes on a slide. While technically plain text, the .gal extension prevents them from automatically opening in spreadsheet software. Researchers often need to convert or rename these files to CSV or XLSX to manipulate the data in Microsoft Excel or analyze it with R scripts. Legacy users might also encounter .gal files associated with older Corel Gallery clipart libraries or ACDSee albums, though these formats are largely obsolete.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GAL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted JPG, PNG, PDA, OLT and L files.
The GAL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GAL converter.
