About LNX files
LNX files typically represent one of two distinct legacy formats, both of which present significant compatibility hurdles on modern operating systems.
The most common variation is a Commodore 64 archive created by the Lynx Archiver, a utility developed by Will Corley. These files function similarly to modern ZIP files but use outdated compression algorithms designed for 8-bit systems. Users frequently encounter these when restoring vintage software or data from disk images. The biggest obstacle is that standard tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR often fail to recognize or extract them correctly, leaving the data locked inside a binary blob. To access the contained programs (often PRG or SEQ files), you generally need to convert the .LNX container into a standard ZIP file or use specialized Commodore file management tools like DirMaster.
Alternatively, an .LNX file may be a ROM image for the Atari Lynx, a handheld console from the early 1990s. In this context, the file contains a digital dump of a game cartridge, often including a specific 64-byte header required by emulators. While these files are essential for preservation, they are unusable without an emulator like Handy or RetroArch. Users often need to verify if the file has the correct header or convert it to a "headerless" LYX format depending on the requirements of their specific emulation software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LNX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LNX file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use Vice or similar software from the "Legacy Archive Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to LNX, try Vice or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Archive Storage" category.
The LNX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LNX converter.
