The .PGF file extension usually refers to a Portable Graphics Format file used within the TeX/LaTeX typesetting ecosystem. These are often generated by the Matplotlib PGF backend or PGF/TikZ. Instead of storing raw pixels or standalone vectors, these files store plain text instructions that a LaTeX engine must compile into a final document. Less commonly, a .PGF file may be a Progressive Graphics File (a wavelet-based bitmap image developed by ETH Zurich), a proprietary font file for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), or an XML-based project file for ABB RobotStudio.
The main disadvantage of .PGF files is a severe lack of portability. LaTeX plot files require a full TeX distribution to render visually, which is frustrating if you just need to share a chart with a colleague. Progressive Graphics Files offer excellent compression but are entirely ignored by modern web browsers. PSP font files are heavily proprietary, locking designers out of using those typefaces on standard operating systems.
