About LAR files
A .LAR file is a proprietary archive format generated by Liferay DXP (formerly Liferay Portal). These files serve as containers for exporting and importing specific site data, including page layouts, portlet setups, themes, and user permissions. While critical for moving data between staging and production environments, the .LAR format presents significant accessibility challenges. It is a 'black box' to anyone without a running Liferay server; you cannot open it with standard office software or web browsers. Furthermore, .LAR files are notoriously version-sensitive - an archive exported from an older version of Liferay often fails to import into a newer version due to schema incompatibilities, effectively locking you out of your data. To bypass these constraints, the best workflow is to treat the file as a container. Since the internal architecture is based on standard compression, you can convert or rename the file to ZIP. This allows you to inspect the manifest.xml for data structure or extract usable assets like DOCX reports, JPG images, and HTML fragments that were stored within the portal archive.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LAR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LAR file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Liferay DXP or similar software from the "Portal Data Export Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to LAR, try Liferay DXP or another comparable tool in the "Portal Data Export Archive" category.
The LAR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LAR converter.
