The .LAR file is a Liferay Portal Archive used by the Liferay enterprise portal platform. It acts as a container to store exported website pages, portlet preferences, themes, and site configurations in a compressed format.
The primary system to open and process these files is the Liferay Portal itself, specifically through its Site Administration export/import interface. Because the underlying format is a standard ZIP archive, you can also use common archiving utilities like 7-Zip or WinRAR to extract the raw contents.
Users frequently struggle with .LAR files because they are tightly coupled to the specific version of Liferay that created them. An export generated by Liferay 6.2 will generally fail to import into Liferay 7.x. Furthermore, without a running Liferay server, the file is simply a disconnected collection of proprietary XML data, manifests, and isolated assets that web browsers cannot natively render as a webpage.
The most practical conversion target is a standard ZIP file to access the raw data. From there, administrators can manually extract individual XML configurations, HTML text snippets, or image assets.
