About LAN files

A .lan file typically represents one of two distinct, specialized raster image formats that standard photo viewers cannot open. The most common modern variant is a Leica Application Suite (LAS) image file, used in microscopy to store images with overlay annotations and calibration data. While critical for scientific documentation, these files create significant friction when sharing research; colleagues without the expensive Leica Application Suite cannot view the layers or even the base image. The second common variant is the legacy ERDAS LAN file (often paired with .GIS), a pre-2000 remote sensing format used to store multispectral satellite imagery. These files are large, uncompressed, and notoriously difficult to integrate into modern workflows dominated by Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs. Users frequently encounter .lan files as language localization data for software like GFI Kerio or games like Two Worlds II, which are essentially renamed XML or text files disguised with a proprietary extension.

For microscopy and GIS professionals, the practical solution is converting these specialized containers into universally compatible formats. For archiving scientific images without losing resolution, convert .lan to TIFF or PDF. For quick sharing via email or web, convert to JPG or PNG. If dealing with localization text, simply opening the file in a text editor often reveals the editable content.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LAN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LIF, LIFEXT, ASO and USB files.

FAQ

If you want to convert LAN file to USB, SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID or IMG, you can use Leica Application Suite or similar software from the "Raster Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to LAN, try Leica Application Suite or another comparable tool in the "Raster Image Storage" category.

The LAN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LAN converter.
