The .KPG extension serves three distinct purposes, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them. The most common modern usage (approx. 35%) is a video format generated by the Kuaishou (Kwai) short-video mobile application. These files often utilize a RIFF container structure but use proprietary encoding that standard desktop players like VLC Media Player or QuickTime frequently fail to recognize. This "mobile-first" lock-in means users cannot easily edit or share these clips outside the app.
Secondly, roughly 22% of these files are standard JPEG images masquerading under a different extension. This often occurs due to specific older camera firmware or batch processing errors. While the data inside is standard, most operating systems won't generate a preview thumbnail, and web browsers will refuse to display them unless the extension is manually changed or the file is converted.
Finally, a legacy segment (under 1%) belongs to Kai's Power Goo, a 1990s graphics tool by MetaCreations used for liquid image distortion. These are effectively obsolete and incompatible with modern Adobe Photoshop versions.
