About KIN files

The .kin extension is a classic example of file format fragmentation, shared by three completely unrelated industries: scientific instrumentation, molecular biology, and railway simulation.

Most commonly (approx. 27%), a .kin file contains spectrophotometry data generated by Shimadzu UVProbe software. These files store raw kinetic measurements from UV-Vis spectrophotometers. The friction here is high: the format is often proprietary and binary, making it unreadable to standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel without the original instrument software to perform an export. Users typically need to convert these to CSV or TXT for analysis.

The second common variant (approx. 23%) is a Kinemage (Kinetic Image) file used by the KiNG viewer from Duke University. These are text-based descriptions of molecular structures used in teaching and research. While human-readable to an extent, they are specialized for the KiNG applet. Users often need to convert these to PDF for publication or PNG for presentations, as web support for Java-based viewers has waned.

Finally, the extension appears in the Trainz Simulator franchise (approx. 18%) as a compiled skeletal animation file. These are strictly internal game assets. A major pain point for modders is that .kin files in Trainz are often binary and version-locked, requiring specific community tools to inspect or convert to standard 3D formats like FBX or OBJ for use in Blender.

The KIN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KIN converter.
