About KDB files

A .kdb file is most frequently an encrypted password database created by KeePass Password Safe (specifically the legacy 1.x version). It acts as a digital vault, storing usernames, passwords, and URLs protected by AES or Twofish encryption. Users typically encounter friction with .kdb files because they are a legacy format; modern security standards and features (like Unicode support, custom fields, and Mono compatibility) are found in the newer KDBX format used by KeePass 2.x. Furthermore, .kdb files are strictly locked; you cannot access the data without the specific master password and the original software. Another significant variation is the IBM Key Database file used by IBM WebSphere and the IBM Global Security Kit (GSKit) to store SSL certificates and keys. These are binary, proprietary files that create vendor lock-in, making it difficult to use the certificates in standard web servers like Nginx or Apache without conversion. For data migration and modern security, we recommend converting KeePass .kdb files to KDBX (for continued use), CSV (for importing into managers like 1Password or Bitwarden), or XML. For IBM files, converting to PEM or P12 is essential for interoperability.

Convert.Guru analyzes your KDB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted KBD, KDBX, MDB, PBIX, KGDB, PSAFE3, JKS, P12, PEM and PFX files.

The KDB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KDB converter.
