About J01 files
The .j01 file is primarily a multi-part split archive fragment, most frequently generated by Akeeba Backup for Joomla! and WordPress websites. When a website backup archive exceeds server upload or storage limits, the backup software automatically slices it into smaller chunks. The sequence usually starts with a primary archive file (like JPA or ZIP) and is followed by sequential parts like .j01, .j02, and .j03. In a secondary use case, a .j01 file might represent a split JPG image downloaded via managers like JDownloader.
The primary disadvantage of the .j01 format is its strict dependency. A .j01 file is useless on its own. It cannot be opened, viewed, or extracted independently because it lacks the primary file header and the rest of the data stream. Users are forced to gather every single piece of the split archive in one folder and use specific, proprietary software - like the Akeeba eXtract Wizard - to reassemble the data.
Because a .j01 is just an arbitrary data chunk, standard online converters will universally fail to process it. You cannot directly convert a .j01 to a standard ZIP or TAR file without first reconstructing the entire backup. Even if the file is a split JPEG image, standard photo viewers will reject it due to the incomplete file structure and non-standard extension.
Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru will inspect the raw hexadecimal data of your .j01 file. If our analysis detects a supported underlying structure - like an embedded image stream or a misnamed JPEG - viewing or conversion may still be possible. If it is a true split archive part, we will identify it so you know exactly which master files you need to track down.
Convert.Guru analyzes your J01 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted J02, J03, J00, JPA, X006, 040 and A001 files.

The J01 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our J01 converter.
