About JNG files
The .JNG file is a specialized raster image format known as JPEG Network Graphics. It was originally designed as a sub-format of the MNG (Multiple-image Network Graphics) animation suite to solve a specific problem: adding alpha transparency to standard JPEG compression. While typical JPEGs are opaque, a .JNG file wraps a JPEG data stream in a PNG-like container, allowing for high-compression photos that still have transparent backgrounds.
However, .JNG is now considered an obsolete "orphan" format. Despite its technical utility, it failed to gain native support in major web browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari. Consequently, users cannot view these files without installing niche software like XnView MP or IrfanView. To make the image usable again, the best practice is to convert it. For modern web use, convert to WebP, which natively supports lossy compression with transparency. For high-quality archiving or editing, convert to PNG.

The JNG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JNG converter.
