The .IG file extension represents a collision of two very different worlds: social media and high-energy physics.
1. Instagram Image (Most Common):
In most consumer cases (approx. 33%), an .IG file is simply a standard JPG or PNG image downloaded from Instagram using third-party scrapers, scripts (like Instaloader), or browser extensions. These tools often truncate the extension or use .ig as a temporary placeholder. The "proprietary" aspect here is an illusion; the file header usually reveals it is a standard raster image. Users often struggle because their operating system does not associate .IG with an image viewer, leaving them unable to open a simple photo without renaming it or forcing it open in software like Adobe Photoshop.
2. CERN iSpy Event Data:
In scientific circles, an .IG file is a specialized data archive used by the iSpy event display for the CMS experiment at CERN. Technically, this is a ZIP archive containing JSON-based event and geometry information from particle collisions. Users involved in physics education or research (like the QuarkNet Masterclass) encounter friction here because the file requires the specific iSpy WebGL environment to be visualized properly. It cannot simply be "converted" to a PDF or DOCX; it must be treated as a data package or extracted to view the raw JSON structures.
Conversion Strategy:
For Instagram files, the most practical "conversion" is often renaming the extension to JPG or converting it to WebP for modern web use. For CERN files, the goal is often extraction (converting to ZIP to unzip) or archiving.
