About JIG files
The .JIG extension is a fragmented format designation used by three distinct, incompatible ecosystems, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them.
1. GameHouse Jigsaw Puzzles (Primary): Most commonly, these files are proprietary game archives created by Super Jigsaw titles from GameHouse. They encapsulate the "cut" of the puzzle pieces, the source image, and the current save state. The Problem: The format is heavily proprietary. You cannot simply double-click a .JIG file to see the image inside; it requires the specific legacy game engine to interpret the piece geometry. Users with old archives often find themselves locked out of their custom puzzle collections on modern operating systems like Windows 11. The Solution: If you are trying to retrieve the image trapped inside, conversion to a standard Raster Image format like JPG or PNG is the only way to view the content without the game engine.
2. MikuMikuDance (MMD) Animation Data: In the 3D animation community, a .JIG file stores interpolation curve data used by MikuMikuDance. The Problem: This data is specific to the MMD physics engine. Trying to load this into professional tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya usually results in errors because standard generic importers do not recognize the curve definitions. The Solution: To use this motion data elsewhere, users must convert or bake the animation into standard exchange formats like FBX or BVH.
3. Reconyx Trail Cameras: Wildlife researchers often encounter .JIG files generated by Reconyx HyperFire cameras. The Problem: These are technically valid JPEG images, but the manufacturer uses the non-standard .JIG extension to associate them with their mapping software, breaking compatibility with standard viewers like Windows Photos or Mac Preview. The Solution: Since the internal structure is standard, these can be instantly converted (or renamed) to JPG for universal compatibility.

The JIG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JIG converter.
