About JDR files
A .jdr file is a proprietary video recording format used primarily by Journey Digital Recorders, Jet-Stream DVR systems, and IROAD dash cams. Unlike standard video files (like MP4 or MOV), JDR files contain raw, unindexed video streams combined with encrypted metadata such as GPS coordinates, G-sensor shock data, and timestamp information.
Because they are designed for continuous, high-stability writing to SD cards and hard drives, they lack the standard headers required by media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player. This creates a significant difficulty: users often retrieve an SD card from a security camera or dash cam only to find the files are unplayable on their computer. To view or edit these recordings, you must typically use the manufacturer's specific utility (such as the JDR Viewer or IROAD PC Viewer) to "export" or convert the footage into a standard format. For sharing evidence, insurance claims, or archiving, converting these files to MP4 (H.264) is the industry standard for compatibility.

The JDR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JDR converter.
