About IVS files
The .ivs file extension primarily belongs to proprietary security camera video files. These are typically generated by digital video recorders (DVRs) from manufacturers like iCatch and Hikvision. Security systems use this custom format to multiplex multiple camera feeds, embed timestamp data, and prevent unauthorized tampering for legal evidence. Secondarily, an .ivs file can be a Wi-Fi packet capture generated by TamoSoft CommView or analyzed with Aircrack-ng. Dealing with .ivs video files is highly frustrating. Because they are proprietary, they are not supported by standard media players like VLC, Windows Media Player, or any web browser. Users usually must track down obscure, poorly-maintained player executables (like the iCatch standalone player or Hikvision VSPlayer) just to watch the footage. These players often trigger antivirus warnings and do not work on mobile phones. Similarly, .ivs packet captures are siloed inside CommView and cannot be directly opened by standard network analysis tools. To make these files usable, you must convert them.
