About IVS files
The .IVS file extension primarily refers to proprietary surveillance video recordings generated by DVRs and NVRs using iCatch technology or Hikvision software. These files contain raw video streams - often encoded with H.264 or MPEG-4 - wrapped in a non-standard container that standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot natively open. This proprietary lock-in forces users to rely on specific playback software provided by the hardware manufacturer, which may be outdated or unavailable. For sharing with law enforcement, insurance claims, or general viewing, users must convert these files to standard formats like MP4 or AVI.
Alternatively, an .IVS file may be a Wi-Fi packet capture file used in network security auditing, specifically associated with Aircrack-ng or TamoSoft tools. In this context, the file stores Initialization Vectors (IVs) extracted from wireless traffic to facilitate WEP key cracking. These files are significantly smaller than full CAP or PCAP dumps because they discard payload data, retaining only the headers necessary for crypto-analysis. Network administrators often need to convert these back to PCAP for analysis in standard tools like Wireshark, though data loss is inherent due to the stripped nature of the format.

The IVS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IVS converter.
