About IFR files

The .IFR file type is primarily associated with the Immersion Force Resource format, a legacy technology developed by Immersion Corporation. These files act as containers for haptic feedback definitions - instructions that tell a joystick, steering wheel, or mouse how to vibrate or resist movement during gameplay. While revolutionary for its time, the format presents significant hurdles today. It is a proprietary, often binary-encoded container that relies on obsolete DirectX 7/8 APIs and the discontinued Immersion Studio.

Users typically encounter these files when digging through the assets of retro games or trying to configure legacy hardware like Logitech WingMan devices. A major limitation is accessibility: modern game engines (like Unity or Unreal) do not natively import .IFR files, and the original authoring software is virtually impossible to run on Windows 10 or 11. This creates a "black box" scenario where the haptic data is locked away.

For preservation and migration, the most practical "conversion" is transforming the binary data into a human-readable format like TXT or XML to analyze the force parameters (magnitude, duration, periodicity). If you are archiving game assets, wrapping them in a ZIP is recommended to prevent data corruption.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IFR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IRF, MLF, PHO and SDX files.

The IFR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IFR converter.
