About IFR files

The .IFR file format stores force feedback effects created with Immersion Studio. These files contain the mathematical parameters needed to trigger specific haptic sensations, such as bumps, rumbles, and textures, on gaming controllers, mice, and other peripherals using IFeel or TouchSense technology. This is a closed, proprietary format designed specifically for Immersion's hardware ecosystem.

A major disadvantage of the .IFR format is vendor lock-in. The files cannot be read or edited by standard text editors or generic game engines without specific proprietary plugins. Developers often need to convert .IFR files to standard formats like XML, JSON, or C++ header files to integrate the haptic data into modern game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine.

Standard online converters fail to process .IFR files because the format relies on undocumented, proprietary binary encoding. Often, only the original Immersion software can properly read, execute, or export this specialized data. However, convert.guru acts as a practical workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extracting the raw values may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IFR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IRF, MLF, PHO and SDX files.

The IFR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IFR converter.
