About AV files
The .av file is primarily a proprietary video container used by Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) and Network Video Recorders (NVRs) for CCTV systems. Brands like Dahua Technology and Avigilon use this format to store raw security footage. A rare, secondary use is the Final Draft AV Script format created by Final Draft software for audio-visual scripts.
The main disadvantage of video .av files is their proprietary lock-in. Standard media players, operating systems, and professional video editing software natively reject them. Users are forced to download clunky, outdated, and often unverified viewing software provided by the camera manufacturer. They lack cross-platform compatibility, making it extremely difficult to share evidence with law enforcement, clients, or upload to the web.
To make these files playable on any device, convert .av to mp4 (best for universal playback and web sharing) or avi (for archiving). If you possess the Final Draft script variant, converting to pdf is required for universal reading. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing sketchy manufacturer software.
