About IPL files

The .IPL file extension primarily represents Item Placement files used in the Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series. These files define the 3D coordinates, rotation, bounding boxes, and level-of-detail (LOD) settings for objects on the game map. A secondary, yet common, use for .IPL is the Intermec Printer Language, which contains raw command scripts used to print barcode labels on industrial printers. Other minor uses include Image-Pro sequence files and Universal Robots URCaps license files.

The main disadvantage of .IPL files is their highly specialized, proprietary nature. In older GTA games (like San Andreas), IPL files were simple plain text, but newer engines compile them into binary format to speed up loading times. This makes them unreadable without dedicated modding tools like OpenIV. Similarly, Intermec printer scripts are raw machine code; testing them by sending them directly to a physical printer wastes expensive label rolls. You cannot simply open these files in standard word processors or image viewers.

To bypass these limits, conversion is required. For GTA modding, convert binary .IPL files to TXT or XML so you can safely edit map coordinates. To preview an Intermec label without printing, convert the script to a PDF or raster image like PNG. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
