About OMP files
The .OMP extension is a notorious source of confusion because it is shared by three completely different file types, often leaving users unsure which software to use. The most common variety (approx. 49%) is an Offline Music Project backup created by OpenMusicPlayer. These are actually standard ZIP containers renamed with an .omp extension, which means your audio data is simply locked inside a misleading wrapper. Users frequently struggle to open these because standard media players do not recognize the container.
Another significant variation is the OpenMind Project file from MatchWare. These are legacy mind-mapping files used by older versions of OpenMind (now MindView). This format is proprietary and difficult to share with colleagues who do not own the expensive, specialized software. Finally, .omp files may be map data for strategy games like Age of Wonders or Overlord, which are strictly for game engine use and not meant for standard editing.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Mind Maps: Convert to PDF or JPG for static viewing, or DOCX if you need to extract the text hierarchy for a report. This bypasses the need for legacy software installation.
- For Game Maps: These generally cannot be converted to usable document formats and should remain as-is for the game engine.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BMP, IPL, W3X and WMB files.
The OMP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OMP converter.
