About IMY files
The .IMY extension primarily identifies an iMelody ringtone file, a legacy format developed by the IrDA (Infrared Data Association) and popularized by Ericsson mobile phones in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Unlike modern audio files that record sound waves, an iMelody file is essentially a text-based script containing instructions for pitch, duration, and simple effects like vibration or backlight blinking (e.g., BEAT:120+LED:0).
The main drawback for users today is compatibility. Because .imy files are monophonic (playing only one note at a time) and rely on archaic synthesis hardware, virtually no modern media player - such as VLC Media Player or iTunes - can open them directly. Furthermore, operating systems often mistake them for generic text files. To use these nostalgic tones on a modern smartphone or archival project, you must convert them. The most practical workflow is converting the instruction set into a MID (MIDI) file for editing, or an MP3 for direct playback.
*Note: In rare cases (approx. 10-15%), an .imy file may be a proprietary voice data archive from the Konami game LovePlus or a Python archive for the Kivy framework. These are binary files and generally cannot be converted to standard audio formats.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your IMY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IMY file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Notepad++ or similar software from the "Monophonic Ringtone Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to IMY, try Notepad++ or another comparable tool in the "Monophonic Ringtone Storage" category.
The IMY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMY converter.
