The .IM_ file extension is exclusively a proprietary video format used by American Dynamics Intellex DVR (Digital Video Recorder) systems. These files store multiplexed security surveillance footage captured by CCTV cameras. They are primarily used in commercial security environments to archive incidents, maintain evidence, and monitor facilities.
Opening a .IM_ file requires the official Intellex Player or Intellex Video Management System. Standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player will fail to play it because the video stream uses a highly specialized proprietary codec.
