The .IM file is an Indexed Mesh 3D model utilized extensively by Trainz Simulator (originally developed by Auran, now N3V Games). It stores the 3D geometry, vertex data, and material references required to render locomotives, train tracks, and environmental scenery within the Trainz game engine.
Modders and 3D creators typically interact with these files using specialized exporter plugins for Autodesk 3ds Max or Blender. These plugins take a raw 3D workspace and compile it into the proprietary .IM format so the game can read it efficiently.
The main disadvantage of .IM files is their highly proprietary nature. Because they are compiled specifically for a single video game engine, standard 3D modeling software cannot open them directly.
