About ICON files
The .icon file extension is a deceptive, non-standard format that often causes confusion because it looks like a typo for the standard Windows ICO format. In reality, the most common use (approx. 29%) is within the Chromium open-source project, where it serves as a specialized vector graphics definition file used to generate UI elements for browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Unlike standard images, these text-based vector definitions cannot be opened by standard viewers like Windows Photos or macOS Preview. Another significant portion (approx. 23%) are simply standard PNG files that have been renamed to .icon for specific use cases in Android development or legacy embedded systems (like satellite receivers). Because operating systems do not natively associate this extension with image viewers, users are often locked out of viewing the content. To use these files practically, you must convert them. For general use, PNG is the safest target. If you need to edit the geometry of a Chromium vector file, converting to SVG allows editing in Adobe Illustrator. If you intend to use the image as a desktop shortcut, you must convert it to the standard ICO (Windows) or ICNS (macOS) format.
