About IAVATAR files
The .IAVATAR file is a proprietary 3D asset format developed by Reallusion for use exclusively within iClone and Character Creator. These files encapsulate complex character data, including topology, high-resolution texture maps, skeletal rigging, and facial morph targets. While this format is highly efficient for real-time animation within the Reallusion ecosystem, it presents a significant barrier for interoperability. Users commonly struggle with issues because .IAVATAR files are effectively "black boxes" - they cannot be directly imported into standard 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya, nor can they be used natively in game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine without processing. Furthermore, assets purchased from the Reallusion Content Store often carry DRM protections that prevent external conversion without a valid license. To use these characters elsewhere, the pragmatic workflow involves opening the file in Character Creator and exporting it to an interchange format. For game development and animation, converting to FBX is the industry standard to preserve rigging and motion. For static rendering or web use, converting to OBJ or GLB is recommended.
