About HXN files

The .HXN extension refers to two distinct file formats, the most common being the Microsoft Help 2.0 Namespace file. This XML-based configuration file was used extensively in Visual Studio 2002–2008 and Microsoft Office 2007 to register and organize help collections. It does not contain the actual document text; instead, it acts as a "traffic controller," pointing the Microsoft Document Explorer (dexplore.exe) to the correct compiled help files (reference .HXS) and indexes. Users often encounter these files when trying to access legacy documentation or SDKs, only to find that modern Windows versions (Windows 10/11) no longer support the Help 2.0 runtime natively. To make the content readable, you cannot simply "convert" the .HXN file itself; you must decompile the associated HXS content into HTML or convert the entire collection to CHM or PDF for archiving.

Less frequently, a .HXN file is a 3D project file created by DAZ 3D Hexagon. These files store 3D geometry, textures, and scene data in a proprietary format. Because Hexagon is a niche modeling tool, sharing these files with users of Blender or Maya requires conversion. For 3D printing or broad compatibility, the best practice is to export the Hexagon project to OBJ (Wavefront Object) or STL formats directly within the software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HXN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DSF, DSX and RDS files.

The HXN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HXN converter.
