About HXN files

The .HXN file primarily functions as a Microsoft Help 2.0 Namespace File. It serves as an index and registry mapping tool for compiled Help 2.0 collections, frequently used in older software like Visual Studio 2002 to 2008.

These files are highly proprietary and practically useless on their own. They do not contain readable text or images; rather, they must exist alongside the main compiled help files, such as HXS (Compiled Help) and HXC (Help Collection). Because Microsoft deprecated Help 2.0 in favor of Help Viewer, .HXN files are now largely obsolete. They require legacy software like Microsoft Document Explorer to process, cannot be opened by standard web browsers, and are difficult to manage on modern operating systems. Converting the underlying help documentation to open standards like HTML or TXT is highly recommended to preserve long-term readability.

A secondary use (accounting for approximately 0.9% of these files) is the Hexagon Model File created by DAZ 3D Hexagon. These files store 3D polygonal geometry and modeling data. However, they suffer from severe software lock-in, requiring you to use Hexagon to export the model into universal 3D targets like OBJ or STL for use in other applications.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because both variations are closed, proprietary formats. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HXN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DSF, DSX and RDS files.

The HXN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HXN converter.
