About HXS files
The .HXS file extension serves two distinct technical roles, both presenting unique accessibility challenges. Primarily, it denotes a Microsoft Help 2 compiled documentation file, a legacy format introduced with Visual Studio .NET (2002-2008). These files act as compressed containers for HTML content, images, and navigation data. The major disadvantage of this format is its obsolescence; the proprietary viewer (dexplore.exe) is no longer standard on modern Windows, leaving users with a locked binary blob they cannot read. To access the documentation inside without installing outdated SDKs, the best approach is to convert the file to PDF for reading or extract the contents to standard HTML.
Alternatively, in the indie gaming scene, .HXS files are Haxe source scripts used by engines like HaxeFlixel and modding tools for Friday Night Funkin'. These are plain text files containing game logic. The friction here is simply file association - Windows does not know how to open them by default. These files do not require complex conversion; changing the extension to TXT or opening them in a text editor like Notepad++ renders them immediately readable and editable.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HXS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert HXS file to HTML, HTM, CSS, JS, PHP, ASP, ASPX, JSP, JSPX, PY, RB or PL, you can use Visual_Studio or similar software from the "Compiled Help Documentation" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RSS, CSS, CGI, SITEMAP, PL, WEBMANIFEST, JSON, JS, XML, HTML, ICO or HTM files to HXS, try Visual_Studio or another comparable tool in the "Compiled Help Documentation" category.
The HXS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HXS converter.
