About HPW files

The .hpw file extension primarily represents a Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) project created by Primatech PHAWorks. These files store critical safety risk assessments, hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), and industrial compliance data. Alternatively, the .hpw extension is used as a HiCAD Part File by ISD Group HiCAD for 3D CAD modeling, or historically as an HP Word document or HP DeskJet printer file. Working with .hpw files is highly restrictive. They are closed, proprietary binary files. Sharing an .hpw file is a major disadvantage because the recipient must possess a costly, specialized software license to open it. Standard web browsers and mobile devices cannot view them. Standard online converters fail to process them because the data structure is completely undocumented. To make this data accessible, users usually need to export these files from the original software into standard formats like PDF, XLSX, or CSV for PHA data, or STEP and IGES for HiCAD 3D parts. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert externally, often only the original software can properly read or export the full data.
