About HPL files

The .hpl extension is primarily associated with HP Tuners VCM Scanner, a diagnostic tool used by automotive enthusiasts to record vehicle performance metrics. These files store telemetry data - such as RPM, throttle position, and intake temperatures - captured during a drive cycle. A common problem is that .hpl files are binary logs locked to the HP Tuners VCM Suite; you cannot simply open them in Microsoft Excel or a text editor to analyze the raw data. To perform custom analysis or share data with someone who doesn't own the suite, users typically need to export the log to CSV format.

Alternatively, an .hpl file may be a Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language (HP-GL/2) file. These are legacy vector instruction sets used to drive pen plotters and early large-format printers. Unlike modern image formats like JPG or PNG, an HP-GL .hpl file contains coordinate commands (e.g., "Lift Pen," "Move to X,Y") rather than pixels. Because modern operating systems and web browsers do not natively render plotter languages, these files are often inaccessible without specialized CAD viewers or legacy drivers. For archiving or sharing technical drawings, the best practice is converting these to PDF for viewing or DXF / SVG for editing in vector software like Adobe Illustrator or AutoCAD.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HPL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HLP, HPL30, HPT, PNG, TMP, PWB and GX files.

The HPL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HPL converter.
