Convert HMM to another file type
To convert your HMM file to another format, you need HMMER or other Data software.
Convert a file to HMM
To convert other file formats to the "Bioinformatics Model" file type, you need software like HMMER or a similar tool.
About HMM files
The .hmm extension represents a collision of highly technical worlds: bioinformatics, gaming, and digital forensics. Most commonly, it serves as a HMMER Sequence Profile, a statistical model used by biologists to find remote homologs in protein or nucleotide databases. While powerful for sequence alignment, these files are essentially useless to the average user without the command-line interface of the HMMER software suite. They are text-based but structurally complex, making them difficult to parse or visualize in standard text editors without breaking the formatting.
In the gaming sphere, .hmm files function as modification scripts for the Hedgehog Mod Manager, a tool used to patch Sonic the Hedgehog games (like Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers). These files contain code instructions or patch logic that the manager injects into the game process. They are proprietary to the modding ecosystem and cannot be run or "played" directly.
Finally, a persistent edge case involves "carved" files from AccessData Forensic Toolkit (FTK). In data recovery scenarios, recovered JPEG images are sometimes automatically assigned the .hmm extension. Users holding these files simply want to see the image but are blocked by the wrong extension.
Conversion Recommendations:
For Analysis (Bioinformatics): Convert HMMER profiles to TXT to inspect the probability matrices, or use tools to visualize them as Sequence Logos.
For Modding: These are generally Text files disguised with a custom extension; opening them in a code editor (like VS Code) allows you to view the script logic.
For Recovery: If the file is a recovered image, renaming it to JPG or converting it to PNG is the quickest way to restore visibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HMM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert HMM file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use HMMER or similar software from the "Bioinformatics Sequence Profile" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to HMM, try HMMER or another comparable tool in the "Bioinformatics Sequence Profile" category.
The HMM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HMM converter.
