About HMM files
The .HMM file extension is a highly ambiguous format because it serves at least four entirely unrelated purposes. Its primary use is storing a Sequence profile Hidden Markov Model, generated by the HMMER software suite. These files contain complex statistical models of biological sequence families - like DNA or proteins - used in computational biology to search databases for homologous sequences. A secondary, highly popular use case is found in the gaming community, where .HMM acts as a plain-text patch script or modification code file for the Hedgehog Mod Manager, used primarily for modding games like Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers. Additionally, digital forensics software like AccessData Forensic Toolkit sometimes saves recovered JPEG images with a .HMM extension. Finally, structural engineering software like hsbcad HsbMETAL and Tekla Structures uses the .HMM extension as a compressed ZIP container to store steel framing 3D projects.
