The .HIR extension usually refers to a proprietary image snapshot generated by IROAD dashcams. While these files internally contain standard JPEG image data, the non-standard extension serves as a form of soft protection, preventing them from opening in default system viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview. This design forces users to rely on the dedicated IROAD PC Viewer to browse their driving footage and event logs. However, this is a common problem when you need to quickly share evidence with insurance agents or law enforcement who cannot install specialized software to view a single file. For these dashcam snapshots, the most practical solution is converting the file to a standard JPG or PNG. This strips away the proprietary association and makes the image universally viewable on any smartphone or computer.
In a completely different context (approx. 4% of cases), a .HIR file functions as a guitar cabinet impulse response (IR) container for Line 6 Helix processors. Unlike the standard audio-based WAV IRs used by most equipment, these specific .HIR files are text-based JSON structures that define acoustic characteristics. Musicians often run into compatibility issues when trying to load these into third-party impulse loaders or older firmware. Converting these text-based files to TXT or PDF allows users to inspect the internal parameters and metadata without needing the full Helix Native suite.
