Convert a file to HIR

To convert other file formats to the "Dashcam Image Container" file type, you need software like IROAD PC Viewer or a similar tool.

About HIR files

The .HIR file extension most commonly represents a Dashcam Recorded Image File generated by IROAD dash cameras. While modern dashcams capture standard media, manufacturers often save images in .HIR wrappers to force users into their proprietary playback ecosystem, specifically the IROAD PC Viewer. In other contexts, a .HIR file functions as a Guitar Cabinet Impulse Response for the Line 6 Helix ecosystem. These files contain acoustic cabinet models formatted internally as JSON data. More rarely, it serves as an Electron Beam Lithography Pattern for Raith hardware (via the Raith 150 Two software) or as a binary game object hierarchy file used by Electronic Arts (EA).

The major disadvantage of the .HIR format is its proprietary obfuscation. If you attempt to open an IROAD .HIR file natively on Windows or macOS, the operating system will fail. Standard image viewers, web browsers, and media players cannot parse the custom file header. This requires users to download clunky, specialized dashcam software just to view a simple snapshot. Similarly, Line 6 files are locked to their specific hardware, making universal sharing difficult without proprietary tools.

Converting these files is highly recommended to restore compatibility. For dashcam files, the ideal target format is JPG, since the internal data structure is usually an unencrypted JPEG stream. For Line 6 files, users often extract the underlying JSON data for analysis or migration to other digital audio workstations.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your .HIR file onto convert.guru to identify the format. We will inspect the file, reveal its internal structure, and if our analysis detects the supported underlying JPG or JSON streams, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The HIR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HIR converter.
