About HHC files

The .HHC file format serves as the Table of Contents (TOC) for the legacy Microsoft HTML Help system. These files are essentially text documents containing HTML unordered lists (<ul>) and list items (<li>) interspersed with ActiveX <OBJECT> parameters that define the tree structure, icons, and link targets for a compiled CHM file. While the underlying data is technically HTML, these files are not designed for modern web browsers. They are relics of the Internet Explorer era, often relying on deprecated specific object identifiers that fail to render correctly in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, leaving you with a blank page or broken list markers. Users frequently encounter these files when attempting to decompile legacy software documentation or reverse-engineer old CHM manuals. Because they are strictly structural components rather than standalone documents, opening them directly provides little value. For practical use, the most effective workflow is converting .HHC to standard HTML or XML to migrate the navigation structure into a modern documentation generator, or to TXT to strip out the proprietary formatting tags for manual editing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HHC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HCW, HHP and CH_ files.
