.HCW files are proprietary scene data files generated by Shot Designer, an application created by Hollywood Camera Work. Directors and cinematographers use these files to build lighting diagrams, block camera movement, and create animated storyboards.
The primary disadvantage of the .HCW format is that it is a closed, proprietary data format. You cannot open it natively in standard web browsers, document viewers, or general 3D animation software. Sharing these files with crew members who do not have a paid Shot Designer license installed on their devices is extremely frustrating, as it halts the production workflow.
