The .HDML file format stores Handheld Device Markup Language data. It was developed in the late 1990s by Unwired Planet (later known as Phone.com and Openwave) to display basic web content on early mobile phones over 2G cellular networks. Because early mobile screens were tiny and network speeds were slow, HDML was designed to be much simpler than standard HTML, utilizing a "card and deck" structure rather than scrolling web pages.
Today, the .HDML format is entirely obsolete and effectively useless for modern web development. Modern web browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari do not support HDML natively. If you try to open an HDML file, your browser will either display raw, unformatted code or prompt you to download the file instead of rendering the page. You must convert these files if you want to view the legacy text content on modern devices or migrate old WAP mobile sites.
The most practical conversion targets are HTML for standard web viewing, TXT for extracting the raw text content, or PDF for document archiving. Converting to HTML usually requires adapting the old HDML "card" structure into modern DOM elements, which often means losing the original mobile formatting.
Because this is a deprecated, specialized format, standard online document converters often fail to process it correctly. The original rendering engine, UP.Browser, has been dead for decades. If our analysis detects the embedded markup, conversion to a modern text format may still be possible.
