About HBC2 files

The .HBC2 file extension represents a HyperBac Compressed File Archive. These files contain highly compressed database backups, typically generated for Microsoft SQL Server. Originally developed by Xceleon Technologies (later acquired by Red Gate Software), the format requires specific enterprise tools to restore or interact with the data. The main disadvantage of .HBC2 is extreme vendor lock-in. It is a proprietary, legacy format. Standard archiving utilities like 7-Zip or WinRAR cannot open or extract it. If your subscription to the backup software lapses, accessing these historical backups becomes a severe challenge. The files are also typically enormous, making storage and migration expensive. To ensure long-term data retention, administrators must restore and convert .HBC2 files into standard SQL Server BAK files, or export the raw schemas and data as plain text SQL scripts. Converting to standard ZIP or GZ is also preferred for vendor-agnostic storage. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert online because the proprietary compression algorithm mandates the original Xceleon engine to decompress the binary stream. We can inspect the file headers, identify the exact software version used, and show underlying text or internal metadata.
