About GV files

A .GV file is a plain text document written in the DOT language. It is used primarily by the open-source Graphviz software, originally developed by AT&T Labs, to define and render complex mathematical graphs, network diagrams, and flowcharts. Users define nodes, edges, and attributes using simple text commands, and the software uses graph routing algorithms to generate the visual structure.

While highly effective for automated diagram generation, the .GV format poses significant challenges for non-technical users. Because it is purely a text-based source file, you cannot view the actual graphical diagram without passing the code through a renderer. Standard image viewers, office suites, and web browsers cannot natively display a .GV file. Sending a .GV file to a client means they will only see lines of code rather than a flowchart. Furthermore, users often need to install command-line tools to process these files locally, which creates an unnecessary barrier.

To make your graphs visible and shareable, you must convert the .GV code into standard visual formats. For scalable web use and manual vector editing in tools like Inkscape, convert to SVG. For embedding in presentations or basic viewing, convert to PNG. For secure document sharing and professional printing, target the PDF format.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GVDESIGN, SVG, GZ, PDF, DOWNLOAD, F3Z, WEBP, XML, CDW, SAV, ZIP, CRDOWNLOAD and ACSM files.

The GV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GV converter.
