About GV files

A .gv file is a text-based script written in the DOT language, used primarily by Graphviz to define directed and undirected graphs. These files describe complex network structures, flowcharts, and dependency trees using simple syntax like a -> b.

While .gv files are highly efficient for storing graph data, they are merely instructions, not images. You cannot "view" the diagram by simply double-clicking the file; you will only see lines of code in a text editor. To visualize the actual graph, the file must be rendered (compiled) using command-line tools like the dot command. This technical barrier often frustrates users who simply need to share a flowchart or network diagram with colleagues. Furthermore, the extension was adopted specifically because the original dot extension conflicted with Microsoft Word templates, adding to user confusion.

To make these files usable for presentations, web display, or documentation, the best workflow is to convert them. For web usage and infinite scalability, convert .gv to SVG. For easy sharing and embedding in documents, convert to PNG or JPG. For professional printing or archiving, PDF is the optimal target.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GVDESIGN, SVG, GZ, PDF, DOWNLOAD, F3Z, WEBP, XML, CDW, SAV, ZIP, CRDOWNLOAD and ACSM files.

The GV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GV converter.
