About GPKG files

The .GPKG file extension primarily represents a GeoPackage file, an open, non-proprietary, platform-independent SQLite database container for geographic information system (GIS) data defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). It efficiently stores vector features, tile matrix sets of imagery, and non-spatial tabular data in a single file. You can open, query, and edit GeoPackage files using specialized GIS software like QGIS or ArcGIS. Less commonly, a .GPKG file is a genealogy data package created by Gramps, which relies on GZIP compression to bundle a family tree XML with its associated media files.

While GeoPackage is the modern standard designed to replace the fragmented, multi-file Shapefile format, .GPKG files pose significant usability challenges. They often grow massive - spanning gigabytes - and require bulky desktop GIS software or SQLite database clients to read. They are virtually useless to external stakeholders who simply need a basic map image, tabular records, or GPS coordinates.

To make this data actionable, users frequently need to convert .GPKG databases. Common target formats include SHP (Shapefile) for older legacy mapping systems, GeoJSON for lightweight web mapping applications, or CSV for tabular data analysis in standard spreadsheet software. For Gramps packages, users typically need to extract the archive or export the tree to GEDCOM format for sharing on ancestry websites.

Because .GPKG files are complex relational databases or compressed archives, standard online image or document converters completely fail to process them.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GPKG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIP, QGZ, SHP, KML, GIS, GPK, 7Z, CPG, DWG, JPG, KMZ, PDF and CSV files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GPKG file to SHP, CSV, KML, GEOJSON, KMZ, DWG, JSON, GDB, XML, YAML, YML or TOML, you can use QGIS or similar software from the "Geospatial Data Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to GPKG, try QGIS or another comparable tool in the "Geospatial Data Container" category.

The GPKG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPKG converter.
